Illegal Baby Trafficking Attempt in Kyiv
Law enforcement in Kyiv has stopped an attempt to illegally trade a newborn child. Representatives of a private medical company specializing in infertility treatments tried to hand over a baby girl to a foreign couple, despite the absence of any genetic connection.
Migration police officers, in collaboration with investigators from the Pechersk police department, identified individuals involved in the illegal transfer of the child to third parties.
During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that a contract was made between the foreign couple and a Kyiv private clinic for reproductive procedures. In 2022, embryos were created and stored, and in 2024, they were transferred to a surrogate mother.
After the birth of twins, DNA testing showed that the girl had no genetic link to the husband. Nevertheless, the company representatives planned to transfer the infant to foreigners, illegally keeping the child in rented apartments in Kyiv. The girl has now been taken to a medical facility.
Investigators have notified the organizer and manager of the private clinic of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: part 3 of article 15 part 3 of article 149 – attempted human trafficking and part 2 of article 169 – illegal actions regarding adoption.
The maximum penalty for these offenses is up to fifteen years of imprisonment.
