New Sensory Room for Visually Impaired Children Opens in Kyiv Hospital
At Kyiv Children's Hospital No. 1, a new sensory room has been launched for children with visual impairments. This dedicated space allows children to explore their surroundings through light, sound, touch, and movement, helping them develop sensory skills, spatial orientation, and self-confidence. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration's Health Department.
The room offers individual and group sessions with specialists who assist children in learning spatial orientation, fine motor skills, and social abilities.
In addition to the sensory rooms, city medical facilities provide a range of services for visually impaired children, including:
- diagnosis and treatment (medication or physiotherapy);
- comprehensive examinations, vision correction with glasses, specialized exercises, and sensory integration techniques;
- surgical intervention for serious visual impairments;
- rehabilitation and sensory activities.
Medical assistance for children with eye diseases is provided on an outpatient basis at 8 consultative-diagnostic centers owned by the Kyiv community. Inpatient care is available at the Municipal Non-Profit Enterprise “Kyiv City Children's Clinical Hospital No. 2” and the Municipal Non-Profit Enterprise “Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 6.”
In 2025, over 22,000 children and adolescents with eye diseases were registered, with more than 200 being assigned disabilities.
The Department emphasizes that to preserve a child's eyesight, it is essential to:
- regularly undergo preventive examinations (conducted at local children's clinics);
- monitor the work and rest regime for the eyes, especially during study and gadget use;
- if necessary, perform early vision correction – glasses or specialized exercises.
