Green Plantings: A New Approach to Forest Restoration in Kyiv

In the capital of Ukraine, in the Partisan Glory Park, an innovative approach to planting vegetation is being implemented based on the method of Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki.
This method is one of the most effective for restoring forests on degraded lands. It mimics the natural processes of forest formation, ensuring rapid tree growth and significant carbon absorption. This was reported by the Darnytsia District State Administration.
The main principle of Miyawaki is the selection of tree species that could naturally grow in the area, creating a diverse and multilayered ecosystem. This allows for the establishment of a sustainable biosystem where plants interact and support each other.
As a result, a forest can form in 20-30 years instead of 150, making this method particularly valuable for modern forest restoration programs.
Kyivzelenbud plans to implement Miyawaki gardens in every district of the city, with a corresponding initiative proposed by the Department of Environmental Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration this year.
