Police Disrupt Criminal Group Supplying Drugs to Kyiv Jail
The National Police of Ukraine has dismantled a criminal organization responsible for supplying drugs to a detention center in Kyiv. In addition to the jail, drugs were sold around the city via hidden stashes. The monthly revenue from this drug operation reached around 500,000 hryvnias. A portion of the proceeds was funneled into a so-called "common fund" controlled by inmates in the detention center. Members of this group also prepared packages containing drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes for the "watchers" in the detention facility, known as "grev." Authorities have charged the organizer and members of the group with multiple offenses under the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
All suspects are residents of Kyiv and the surrounding region, aged between 30 and 49. The group specialized in delivering drugs to the Kyiv detention center. To facilitate this, the organizer set up a drug lab for producing amphetamines, located in the apartment of a so-called "cook".
Amphetamines were concealed in food products or household items and sent to the detention center. The majority of drugs were supplied to the jail, while the remainder was sold in Kyiv via hidden stashes. A certain percentage of the sales was contributed to the so-called "common fund".
Additionally, the criminals prepared "grev" packages for the "watchers" at the facility, which included cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and other items. The assembled packages were stored in the garage of one of the suspects.
In total, the members of the group were "earning" up to 500,000 hryvnias per month from amphetamine sales.
To neutralize the group’s activities, operatives from the strategic investigations unit in Kyiv, along with investigators, conducted a series of operations. As a result, one member of the group was detained. In total, four individuals were charged – the organizer and his accomplices. Depending on their roles and involvement, they face charges under the following articles: - Part 3 of Article 307 (Illegal production, manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation, mailing, or sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, or their analogs), - Part 2 of Article 311 (Illegal production, manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation, or mailing of precursors) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. During searches, police seized amphetamines, cannabis, packages for the "watchers," cash, laboratory equipment, components for producing amphetamines, and more.
The investigation continues under the supervision of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office. The maximum penalty for the charged offenses is 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
