Enhancing Transport Accessibility for Everyone
Approximately one-third of public transport drivers in Kyiv have completed specialized training aimed at enhancing transportation services for individuals with disabilities. This information was provided by KP 'Kyivpastrans'.
During the training, drivers learn about the principles of accessibility, practice effective communication with passengers, and work on procedures for safely boarding and alighting passengers who use wheelchairs and other assistive devices.
"Our drivers are experienced professionals. However, given today's challenges, continuous skill enhancement is crucial. This will help drivers better understand the needs of people with disabilities and ensure comfortable transportation for everyone," said Tatyana Tarasko, acting general director of KP 'Kyivpastrans'.
The training is conducted in collaboration with the NGO 'Group of Active Rehabilitation' in a format that includes lectures and practical exercises simulating real-life scenarios on routes.
"Practical training is a vital part of our courses. During the sessions, drivers practice action protocols for situations they frequently encounter on routes. This not only reinforces foundational knowledge but also teaches them to respond effectively to various passenger requests. I am confident that after completing the training, the quality of services for people using assistive devices will significantly improve," noted Oleksiy Poroh, an instructor from the NGO 'Group of Active Rehabilitation'.
Classes are held daily except on weekends, gradually involving all drivers from the company. The series of training sessions was initiated by Ulyana Pcholkin, deputy chair of the NGO 'Group of Active Rehabilitation', deputy chair of the Accessibility Council in Kyiv, and an expert on inclusion.
