The Sea of Azov is experiencing increased salinity levels, linked to the aggressive actions of Russian forces. This has caused a surge in jellyfish populations, negatively affecting the conditions for recreation along the coast.
This information was shared by the Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on their Facebook page.
«The increase in salinity is a result of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, which has significantly reduced the inflow of fresh water into the Sea of Azov due to the destruction of the Siverskyi Donets — Donbas canal. This has led to an abnormal rise in jellyfish numbers in the waters,» — the CCD reported.
Additionally, Russian fishermen have greatly increased fish catch and are dumping contaminated wastewater into the sea, leading to the mass death of fish species such as goby.
«The situation in the Sea of Azov is on the brink of ecological disaster, yet instead of addressing this issue, the occupiers attempt to shift the blame onto Ukraine,» — emphasized the Center for Countering Disinformation.
