Legal Action Against Those Responsible for Cable Car Tragedy in Kyiv
The fatal incident on the cable car over the Dnipro River in Kyiv will lead to a trial of five individuals who neglected safety protocols.
The Pechersk District Prosecutor's Office in Kyiv has submitted an indictment against five individuals, including the attraction designer, the director of the company that won the contract to build the cable car, an expert who inspected the attraction, and an entrepreneur who managed the cable car since 2024, as well as a former technical supervisor from the municipal enterprise ‘Pliso’.
It is important to note that on July 21, 2024, the steel cable of the attraction snapped, resulting in a 20-year-old man falling into the Dnipro and losing his life.
It has been established that:
- the attraction designer made several critical mistakes, including using a cable that was not suitable for attractions, which ultimately led to the cable's failure;
- the director of the company approved this technical project;
- the expert from a private firm, who conducted the inspection for the entrepreneur, failed to notice that the installed cable did not meet its intended purpose;
- the entrepreneur responsible for managing the cable car was required to conduct daily inspections but did not respond to the poor condition of the cable;
- these four accused will be tried for violating safety regulations during high-risk work that led to loss of life (Part 2 of Article 272 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The former technical supervisor from ‘Pliso’ was responsible for ensuring the safe operation of municipal facilities. He will be tried for official negligence that resulted in severe consequences (Part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
