Investigations into Traffic Accidents Involving NABU Officers
According to the materials from the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI), the Prosecutor General's Office has charged three NABU officers in connection with traffic accidents involving victims.
In one incident, an officer exiting a secondary road in Kyiv collided with a vehicle traveling on the main road. Following the collision, the officer's vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a bystander. The man sustained severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of his left leg.
In another incident, while attempting to overtake another vehicle on the Kyiv-Odesa highway, the officer failed to maintain a safe speed, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and roll over, crashing into a gas station building. As a result, a passenger in the officer's car suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures and a traumatic brain injury.
In a third incident, while driving a service vehicle at a controlled intersection in Kyiv, the officer hit a pedestrian who was crossing the street at a green traffic light. The pedestrian sustained moderate injuries.
As a result of the preliminary investigation, all three individuals have been charged with violating traffic safety rules that led to serious bodily injuries (Part 2 of Article 286 and Part 1 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The issue of preventative measures for the suspects is currently being decided. The prosecution intends to request custody for at least two of them.
If found guilty of committing serious crimes, the officers could face up to 8 years in prison.
The Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office and the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor's Office are overseeing the legal proceedings.
