On July 9, Pope Leo XIV held an audience with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, at his residence in Castel Gandolfo.

During the meeting, the ongoing war and the urgent need for finding just paths to peace were discussed.
«In a heartfelt conversation, the importance of dialogue as the best path to ceasefire was reaffirmed. The Holy Father expressed sorrow for the victims and renewed his prayers and closeness to the Ukrainian people, supporting every effort aimed at freeing captives and seeking common solutions,» the communiqué stated.
The Holy Father also reiterated his willingness to host representatives from Russia and Ukraine in the Vatican for negotiations.
