EU's Stance on Ukraine's Membership: New Developments
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed that Ukraine has met all necessary requirements and deserves to begin the first stage of negotiations with the EU, currently stalled by Hungary's position.
Von der Leyen made this statement at a press conference following the meeting of EU leaders in Brussels, as reported by "European Truth".
She emphasized that despite the ongoing challenges, Ukraine continues to implement reforms.
"This is truly impressive. That is why the European Commission advocates for the opening of the first negotiation cluster. Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations — now it is our turn. The membership process is based on merits, and Ukraine deserves to move forward," von der Leyen stated.
It is worth noting that at the Brussels summit on June 26, 26 EU leaders supported the opening of the first negotiation cluster with Ukraine, but this decision was blocked by Hungary.
The government remains hopeful for the opening of the first negotiation cluster after the EU summit.
Hungary continues to insist on blocking Ukraine's progress toward EU membership. This was discussed in the article titled "The EU Between Orban and Trump".
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Thursday that the results of the so-called "referendum" regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU empower him to speak even more loudly against Ukraine's membership.
