Unofficial Talks Among G7 Leaders Ahead of Summit
On the eve of the official opening of the G7 summit in Canada, an extended informal discussion occurred among several leaders of the group.
Italian media, particularly Sky TG24, reported this.
The meeting included Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The gathering, which took place at the resort hosting the summit, began with greetings and a few jokes among the leaders, and according to media reports, served as an opportunity for initial discussions ahead of the G7's commencement.
In recent hours, Italian sources indicated the aim of finding a unified stance with European partners regarding the conflict between Israel and Iran, with the goal of achieving coordinated action with U.S. President Donald Trump.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that greater pressure must be exerted on Russia to ensure a ceasefire in Ukraine and urged G7 countries to intensify sanctions to achieve this goal.
In light of the deadlock in diplomatic negotiations, the European Union intends to adopt a new sanctions package against Russia, but so far they have not succeeded in persuading Trump, who is reluctant to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin, to implement new U.S. sanctions. Trump stated that he does not want sanctions to impede the achievement of a truce.
As reported earlier, on June 10, the European Commission presented its 18th sanctions package against Russia.
