New Film on Religious Persecution in Ukraine
This initiative was undertaken by a team specializing in investigations of war crimes, including journalist Danilo Mokryk.
According to Olga Rudenko, the editor-in-chief of «The Kyiv Independent», the film reveals the names of officials involved in religious persecution, and features interviews with clergy from churches that have been targeted during the Russian occupation.
«This week we are releasing a new, crucial film: „No God But Theirs“. It focuses on how Russians are persecuting Christians in Melitopol. This subject is important because it has a great opportunity to „reach out“ to Western audiences, particularly Americans, for whom religious freedom is a significant issue. The persecution of Protestants is especially relevant», — Rudenko emphasizes.
From the first days of the full-scale invasion and the occupation of Melitopol, churches became not only places of prayer but also centers of stability for local residents. Daily prayers for Ukraine were held in the central square,
However, over time, believers had to go underground. The occupying authorities conducted searches, interrogations, banned church activities, and confiscated property. Some priests were deported or forced to flee their homes under pressure and threats.
The primary audience for the film is international, but «The Kyiv Independent» will hold a unique special screening in Ukrainian for viewers in Kyiv.
After the screening, there will be a discussion with the authors.
