Marina Vyazovska: Pioneering New Frontiers in Mathematics
Renowned Ukrainian mathematician Marina Vyazovska has been elected as an international member of the National Academy of Sciences USA.
This announcement was made on the academy's official website, highlighting her significant contributions to research.
The National Academy of Sciences USA, established in 1863, recognizes scientists for their outstanding achievements in the field. Alongside the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine, it provides advisory services to the government and other organizations.
Currently, the academy has 2662 active members, of which 556 are international.
This year, 150 new members have been elected:
- 120 American scientists;
- 30 scholars from other countries.
Ukrainian Marina Vyazovska has become an international member while serving as a professor and head of the number theory department at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
Her contributions to theoretical mathematics have garnered international acclaim, and in 2022, she became the second woman in history to receive the Fields Medal - the most prestigious award in mathematics, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics."
Vyazovska's most notable achievement is her solution to the problem of sphere packing in eight-dimensional space, which had remained unsolved for over 400 years.
Her elegant and concise solution, published in 2016, is regarded as a breakthrough due to its implications for digital communication, coding theory, and cryptography.
In 2022, she was included in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people changing the future of the world.
