Celebrating Kyiv Day: Traditions and Symbols
Every year, the last spring weekend is a significant occasion for the capital of Ukraine, as Kyiv celebrates its “birthday” on May 25 this year.
Kyiv Day: Traditions and History
According to legend, the city of Kyiv was founded by the princes Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv, and their sister Lybid, although the exact founding date is unknown. Archaeological evidence suggests that Kyiv emerged around the 6th century AD, starting as a small settlement on what is now known as Old Kyiv Hill.
Kyiv boasts over 1500 years of history, and although it has not always served as the capital of Ukraine, it now plays a vital role in the nation’s culture and politics.
The first celebration of Kyiv Day took place in May 1982, marking the city’s 1500th anniversary. However, historians believe that the true age of Kyiv is even greater. This celebration was a means to divert attention from the Holodomor of 1932-33.
Before the war in 2022, the celebration was always accompanied by sports events, festivals, and other activities. Even in the current climate, the city plans to hold themed events, although on a smaller scale.
Symbols of the Celebration
- The Kyiv coat of arms featuring Archangel Michael, symbolizing the city.
- The blue and yellow flag representing Ukraine's independence.
- The Kyiv anthem, written by Dmytro Lutsenko, which became official in 2014.

What to Expect from the 2025 Celebration?
Last year, numerous cultural events took place, including concerts and film screenings. This year, we anticipate new events, including a charity run and concerts. The official program of events has yet to be published, but we are keeping an eye on updates.
