Cultural Initiatives of Ukraine Amidst War
In the context of ongoing war, Ukrainian culture, championed by stars like the National Chamber Orchestra 'Kyivska Kamerata', asserts its unique identity both domestically and internationally.
Projects in Ukraine allow Europeans to appreciate the complexity of our history and its intrinsic connection to European values.
A recent example is the Easter concert in Berlin, which highlights the importance of cultural outreach within the country, particularly in frontline cities.
“We must continue to showcase our cultural heritage, as it needs safeguarding after decades of neglect,” says Ukrainian People's Artist Bohdana Pivnenko. “We must constantly remind the world of our suffering. Human memory fades quickly. Therefore, we collaborate with international artists to draw attention to Ukraine,” she adds.
On April 21st, the charity concert Sound of Ukraine — an die freie Welt took place in Berlin to support Ukrainian women, artists, and children affected by war. Leading Ukrainian musicians participated, with the globally renowned Keri-Lynn Wilson conducting, emphasizing the power of Ukrainian music as a symbol of our nation’s resilience.
Special guest mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo, known for her signature performances, added to the concert's significance. The program featured modern Ukrainian works, including pieces by Zoltan Almashi and other notable composers.
Before the concert, an exhibition titled 'Voices of Freedom' honored the memory of artists who lost their lives during the war. Proceeds from ticket sales will support projects that uplift Ukrainian culture.
In May, the National Ensemble of Soloists 'Kyivska Kamerata' will present a unique program at Kharkiv Music Fest, featuring world-renowned clarinetist Julian Milkis, who actively supports Ukraine.
This virtuoso musician performs Ukrainian compositions and raises funds for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, visiting military hospitals. The concert in Kharkiv will include works by eminent composers, including Giya Kancheli.
These cultural initiatives not only underscore the strength of Ukrainian culture but also help the world understand the real Ukraine.
P.S. On May 7th, Kancheli's cycle 'Letters to Friends' will also be performed in Kyiv, marking an important event for Ukrainian culture.
