The Evolution of Kyiv's Libraries: New Opportunities and Initiatives
The Commission for Culture and Tourism of the Kyiv City Council has approved the report from the Department of Culture regarding the implementation of the program «Capital Culture: 2022–2024» for the year 2024, particularly focusing on the results from the city's public libraries.
According to Victoria Mukha, a member of the Kyiv City Council and chair of the standing committee, libraries remain a vital part of the city's cultural environment, adapting to new challenges and community needs.
«Today, libraries are not just about books; they serve as spaces for communication, education, and development. They are evolving along with society, becoming more open and modern public spaces. The numbers speak for themselves: last year, the library collection grew by over 75,000 new copies, and visits exceeded 570,000», emphasized Victoria Mukha.
She noted that the spaces in libraries are expanding — from reading rooms to multimedia and educational hubs.
«In 2024, 17,460 events were held in Kyiv's libraries, attracting over 410,000 participants. Additionally, more than 80 courses and clubs for learning Ukrainian operated in 68 libraries. This indicates the demand for new formats and confirms that libraries are becoming true centers of community interaction», added Victoria Mukha.
