Innovative Robot Enhances Colon Cancer Diagnosis
A team of scientists has created a miniature robot designed to enhance the diagnostic capabilities and treatment of colon cancer, one of the most prevalent cancers globally. The robot resembles a mussel shell and navigates through the digestive system via magnetic control. This allows for unique scanning capabilities that were previously unattainable. The new approach not only accelerates cancer detection but could also enable targeted drug delivery in the future.
The device was developed by researchers from the universities of Leeds, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Following successful trials on pigs, they aim to initiate human testing in 2025. The robot is created using 3D printing technology.
Due to its compact size, the robot can operate in the stomach, esophagus, and intestines. Its application has the potential to reduce diagnostic delays, lower costs, and eliminate the need for traditional biopsies.
