Sentence for Drunk Driver in Kyiv
In Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, a verdict was reached for a driver who, under the influence of alcohol, struck a 14-year-old girl at a pedestrian crossing and fled the scene.
The 33-year-old man was sentenced to 4 years in prison and banned from driving for 5 years.
This information was reported by the Kyiv city prosecutor's office.
The incident occurred on November 18, 2024, on Dashkevych Street when the driver of a Seat Toledo hit the girl who was crossing the road on a green light.
After the collision, the man left the scene without assisting the injured child. Witnesses called the police and an ambulance.
As a result of the accident, the girl sustained moderate injuries and was hospitalized at the "Okhmatdyt" hospital.
According to Kyiv city prosecutor's office spokesperson Iryna Vynokurova, the driver was located and arrested within a few hours, as he lived nearby. A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol content of 2.3 per mille.
"Given that the suspect had a prior criminal record for causing bodily harm, prosecutors requested his detention," she noted.
In court, the man admitted his guilt but did not compensate the injured girl for damages.
Consequently, he was found guilty of multiple offenses and sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment along with a 5-year driving ban. This represents the harshest penalty under the charges he faced (part 1 of Article 286-1, part 1 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
