Celebrating Athletes: Kyiv Honors Olympic Medalists
The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, met with Kyiv athletes who won medals at the XXXIII Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in Paris at the city hall. Traditionally, the city honored the athletes and their coaches with financial rewards.
This year, the awards increased. Athletes who won gold received nearly 2.5 million UAH, while bronze medalists got over 1.2 million UAH. Their coaches also received monetary bonuses.
“From July 26 to August 11 of this year, Kyiv athletes, as part of the Ukrainian national team, participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. Sports organizations, athletes, coaches, and professionals in physical culture and sports worked hard to prepare our Olympians for these significant competitions. Kyivans showed high sports mastery and the will to win – the Ukrainian flag was raised twice in their honor. A total of 140 athletes competed for our country in 26 sports, with 42 Kyivans winning medals in 15 disciplines,” the mayor noted.
Of the 12 medals won by the Ukrainian team at the last Olympics, the gold medals were claimed by Kyivans Olga Kharlan and Yuliya Bakastova in the team sabre fencing events. Two bronze medals were secured by Olga Kharlan in individual sabre fencing and Iryna Herashchenko in athletics (high jump). Additionally, our athletes achieved 5th and 6th places.
“Our Olympians have proven that Ukrainians are winners. Thank you for your professionalism and determination to win. I know how challenging it is to achieve victories in sports. Glory to Ukraine and those who glorify it!” emphasized Vitali Klitschko.
